I spent 14 years as a Cavalry Scout in the U.S. Army. Scouts work the space between headquarters and the ground: you go forward, see what is actually there, and make the plan survive contact.
When I got out and finished a Computer Science degree, I found the same empty space in the AI industry. One camp sells the platform. Another teaches you to prompt it. Almost nobody stands next to the actual teacher, shop owner, or veteran and connects the person to the tool, hands on.
That empty layer is the company
That empty layer is my company. VetTech Homefront LLC is veteran-led AI training and implementation, based in Bethel, Ohio — population about 2,800. We serve Clermont County and Greater Cincinnati. The work is practical: help real people use AI as a tutor and a tool, not as a substitute for learning.
I am a solo, bootstrapped founder with tight time and tighter money. Claude is a large part of why that is enough. It drafts and pressure-tests business documents. It runs research under a rule I carried over from the Army: no claim counts until it is checked against a primary source. Claude Code builds and verifies the software side of the work. One veteran plus Claude is doing what used to take a staff. That is not a slogan. It is my calendar.
This business was not built with Claude as a product feature. It was built on Claude as a workforce.
Who else gets to build
The interesting economic story is not only what AI does to software engineers. It is who else gets to build now. A 14-year NCO with no venture backing can stand up a real company from a house in rural Ohio because tools like Claude collapse the distance between one person and an organization.
Veterans are one of the strongest test cases in the country: disciplined, mission-oriented, used to responsibility well above their pay grade, and systematically underestimated by the industry. That is the workforce standing in AI’s missing middle — teachers, small business owners, and veterans who need someone next to them, not another platform pitch.
